German player and author. International Grandmaster, 1950. International Arbiter, 1951. Trivia by Bill Wall Born Jakob Mieses but he changed his name to sound more elegant. He was the first British player to receive the Grandmaster title When he was in his 84, Jacques played a game against the Dutch master, Van Forrest, who was two years older than he. After he had won, Mieses rose from the board and said, "Youth has been victorious." |
